What I have Learned About Management

What I Have Learned About Management by Brij Singh I

As I tried this approach of solving industrial or business problems at work, I became frustrated and angry as the solution did not work. The human element started showing up
The economist is the social scientist who creates commerce and designs financial models for everything from an individual, to a business, to a national economy. The economist uses logic which is essentially use of mind. That is of concern here is the economist's view of the human being. The essence of the economist's stance on people is that the exchange of tangible value explains human motivation and defines organizational purpose. The economic model forces us to accept ourselves and others to operate out of self-interest. We become cynical about our organizations, and therefore about ourselves.
While I was studying for my par-ime MBA, what I learned at school and what I experienced at the workplace were far apart in terms of management principles and practices.
am an engineer by training. I also studied engineering economics in the engineering schooL Early in my career I used to solve problems from a logical approach just like solving any mathematical problems. I thought in the beginning that there is a fixed solution for a particular problem. I believed that the engineer exists to solve problems and I cared deeply about tools/techniques and methodology and how to use it. The engineer treats every challenge as though it were amenable to a logical solution. The logical solution requires use of mind for which I had extensive schooling and training. The engineer deals with installation, implemention, measurement, and milestones. To be an engineer is to fall in love with engineering tools and methodologies. in solving problems, the economic issues started showing up. I had to get approval for resources to implement the solution. The Return On Investment (ROI) became the mantra for solving problems and its justification for implementation. I learned quickly that the economist created a world where the sole purpose of a company was to return money to its shareholders. Everything must be justified in terms of its economic return. How much does it cost? How long will it take? What will we get for it? the same beliefs that support the instrument/tool aspects of our thinking. The ally of the engineer is the economist, for engineering justifies its way of thinking on the basis of cost, as well as safety, control, and predictability. in implementation of the solutions. Engineering is not about the world of relationships, emotions, or abstraction. Relationships, to an engineer, are something to be endured, they are at best a means to an end. There is a twin desire, for an engineer, to be right and also to circumvent what is personal and emotional. The personat is too unreliable, too easily subject to whim and fancy.
